Over the past few months, Angela has been visiting Salford Royal and Huddersfield Royal Infirmaries to talk with people about fostering. As a regular visitor to both hospitals, she's enjoyed many warm conversations with medical staff, volunteers, patients, and visitors about what being a foster carer involves.

Having worked as a nurse herself, Angela feels right at home in the hospital environment. "Even though hospitals are such busy places, people are always happy to stop and chat about fostering," she says. "Everyone is so welcoming and friendly, and there's genuine interest in learning more about how they could help make a difference in a child's life."

These hospital visits have created wonderful opportunities to connect with people interested in fostering, with Angela's caring nature and first-hand experience helping her answer questions and share insights about this rewarding role.

Did you know that it is National Storytelling Week on 1st - 9th February?

Stories teach us about the world; they allow us to step into someone else’s shoes and feel empathy; they help us to relax and escape and they can help develop essential literacy skills.

We will be celebrating the magic of storytelling, and the power of sharing imaginative stories, by asking our children and young people to share their stories with us in a competition!

The competition is open to all ages and abilities, and we will be accepting all forms of storytelling. We can't wait to see them, and share them with you too. Keep a look out for some of the entries shared on our Instagram and Facebook pages.

Safehouses Foster Carer, Paul, left his career in Engineering to become a Foster Carer almost 10 years ago, and he's never looked back. Here he is with McKenzie, sharing one of their favourite memories together, when it was confirmed that McKenzie would remain in their care until he was ready for independence.

Many of us get to a stage when we feel we can do something more meaningful with our lives. Making a real difference to a child's life can provide this opportunity. If you feel you would like this challenge, please contact us to discuss taking the next step to begin your new career as a Foster Carer.

We are welcoming in the new year at the Safehouses office with a beautiful view of the Saddleworth hills. We are looking forward to welcoming our Foster Carers back into the office for upcoming training, support groups and events.

Our comprehensive training calendar is tailored to feature all the required mandatory courses including Safeguarding, Paediatric First Aid, Recording Skills and Equity and Diversity. In addition, we provide training to complement and enhance our Foster Carers' existing skillset and experience, delivered in person and online, by experts in the field. This year we have a range of courses from 'Fostering in a Digital World' to 'Independence Skills' to 'Life Story Work'.

We are also introducing 'Wellbeing Wednesdays' this year, where our Foster Carers will have a dedicated time to promote and improve their overall mental, physical, and emotional health in a safe and supportive environment. Our first session will feature a head, neck and shoulder massage for each of our Foster Carers!

Our popular 'Fostering through the Menopause' and 'Men in Fostering' groups will continue to run this year to provide a safe space for Foster Carers to share their personal experiences and receive peer support.

We always welcome feedback and suggestions on how we can improve our training and support package for our Foster Carers and their family members. Let us know if there is anything you would like to see on our training calendar this year to help in your role.
